3M3D: Course descriptions, distances, maps and profiles

The course is mostly on trails and dirt roads. For details on each day, please follow the links provided below:

Grand Slam Marathon 1

  • Terrain: Dirt roads, single tracks, short sections on bitumen

Terrain: dirt roads, single tracks
0km – 1.5km. NOTE for past competitors. There is a course change here! Start in the carpark at Barron Falls Lookout (bitumen) – Wright’s Lookout.
1.5km – 16.5km. Single track. McDonalds track (4.7km) (dirt road – right onto Douglas track (2.45km) – left onto Gandal Wandun track (1.5km) – left turn onto Smith’s Track. Turn RIGHT (stay on the forestry track) – Smith’s Track Checkpoint (see map below for this section)  
16.5km – 23km. NOTE for past competitors. There is a course change here! From Smith’s Track checkpoint continue STRAIGHT onto Stoney Creek Road – left into Speewah Road– right onto Snake Gully bush track.
23km – 28km. Snake Gully Track in Dinden National Park (single track).
28km – 42.2km. Clohesy River Road Checkpoint. NOTE for past competitors: There is another course change here! LEFT – Clohesy River Road (dirt road) past the Fig Tree all the way to Copperlode Dam (10km). Follow the signs down the bush track to Crystal Cascades.

* If you want to use the toilets at Copperlode Dam you will need to go off the course to do so.

WARNING: The last 1km down to Crystal Cascades is REALLY STEEP. Single track, lots of tree roots. Take special care. You don’t want to injure yourself here and be out for the rest of the grand slam!

Marathon 1 profile. Elevation gain: 1,391m

Grand Slam Marathon 2

Terrain: Bitumen, dirt roads

0km – 1.8km. Start on the zebra crossing on Lake Morris Road at Copperlode Dam (bitumen). Follow the road around and out the gate. Turn around and come back the same way. The rest of this marathon course will be updated later as we’ve changed the direction and need to map it out again!

Fig Tree Half Marathon

  • Terrain: Bitumen, dirt roads
  • Start at Copperlode Dam – run out to the Fig Tree, around the boardwalk, return to Copperlode Dam and finish at the kiosk.

Grand Slam Marathon 3 and Cairns Marathon

Terrain: half dirt road, half bitumen

0 – 14.5km. NOTE for past competitors. There is a course change here! Start on the corner of Clohesy River Road and Cedar Park Road. Run along Cedar Park Road to the turnaround. When you get back to Clohesy River Road turn RIGHT and run up to the turnaround at the highway. Return along  Clohesy River Road to the Fig Tree. Run a loop on boardwalk.

14.5km – 21.5km. Fig Tree – Clohesy River Road. You will pass the gate you climbed over yesterday while doing Marathon 2.

21.5km – 25km. Continue along Clohesy River Road to Copperlode Dam Checkpoint (at the kiosk).

25km – 39.5km. Lake Morris Road (bitumen) 5km climb before a long descend down to the base of Lake Morris Road – left – cross road onto bitumen footpath alongside Reservoir Road.

39.5km – 42.2km. Follow footpath and cross over the service road, run past the Mobile Service Station. Left turn into Christies Drive. Cross over View Street. Follow Shale Street down to Goomboora Park. Right turn into Goomboora Park. Follow footpath to the finish.

Lake Morris Road Race

Terrain: bitumen

0km-14km. Start at the kiosk at Copperlode Dam on Lake Morris Road (bitumen). There is a 5km climb before a long descend down to the base of Lake Morris Road. Cross over the road onto bitumen footpath alongside Reservoir Road.

14km-16km. Follow footpath and cross over the service road, run past the Mobile Service Station. Left turn into Christies Drive. Cross over View Street. Follow Shale Street down to Goomboora Park. Right turn into Goomboora Park. Follow footpath to the finish.
